How to Password-Protect a PDF (3 Ways)

Lock a PDF with a password on Mac, on Windows, or by sharing it through a protected link.

1. On a Mac with Preview

Open the PDF in Preview → File → Export → tick Encrypt → enter a password → Save.

2. With Microsoft Word or Acrobat

In Word, File → Save As → PDF → Options → "Encrypt the document with a password". In Acrobat, use Tools → Protect → Encrypt with Password.

3. Share a password-protected link

Encrypted files can still be forwarded with the password. A protected Zip Link lets you change or remove the password at any time and see who opened it — without sending the file itself.

Choosing a strong password

  • At least 12 characters
  • Share it through a different channel than the document
  • Never reuse an email or account password

Share it the smart way with Zip Link

Once your PDF is ready, upload it to zip-link.com to turn it into a page-flipping book with its own link, QR code and embed code. You can see who opened it, how long they read and which pages held their attention — and capture leads before they reach the end.
